My Top 10 Most Played Games on Steam

One feature that makes Steam stand out is its ability to record the hours spent in a video game. Of course it is not accurate due to idling and time spent loading into the game but regardless here is my 10 most played games on Steam. Oh and all screenshots are taken by me.

10. CSGO - 70 Hours

There was 2 games competing for this spot. No Man's Sky with 64 hours and Rocket League with 58 but this game managed to make it. Why?

When I first got Steam my friends recommended CSGO. It had only came out at the time and I was weary of the cost. 2 years later it was on sale so I thought why not? What followed was a series of endless nights practicing with bots. When I managed to get the hang of the game I joined my friends in a comp which ended terribly. They had became so sucked into this game that it was at a no point of return. 1 guy I knew had spent all his savings just to buy a few skins!

I know CSGO is a popular game and lots of people love it but it's not for me. I'm not saying I regret the time playing it but I would have preferred to play something else.

9. Just Cause 3 - 83 Hours

I was a huge fan of Just Cause 2 and you could imagine the excitement when the first trailer for the 3rd game dropped. I pre-ordered immediately and got the game on launch. I suffered the same fate as everyone else when it came to the optimization issues. I got a solid 25 FPS when playing which made the game impossible to play. I managed to get over it and try to experience the game at what it is. This game was fun but not as good as the second.

8. Guardians of Orion - 85 Hours

Guardians of Orion (or GOO) is a game we've covered on this website before. It has a Destiny-like feel to it and is one of the finer indie games on the Steam store. It has a easy to learn crafting system.

The games devs recently brought out the massive 2.0 update went silent for a while. We contacted them and they responded with a statement that they needed some time to work on the game. Time will tell the state of this game in the future.

7. War Thunder - 87 Hours

War Thunder is a great war game but the people who made it? Not so much. The game now contains a virus every time you download it but this used to be a great game.

6. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel - 106 Hours

Borderlands has been a franchise close to my heart for while now. I was amazed to see the Humble Bundle was giving away the likes of Civ V, Battleborn and the Pre Sequel for only £11 back in July.

I was sucked into the game for weeks. I enjoyed the fact that they borrowed most of the mechanics from Borderlands 2 but at the same time introduced more. It's praised for its replay value and returning characters but not as great as Borderlands 2 but still impressive for a game made in 2 years. I don't regret 1 second.

5. Rust - 110 Hours

Rust, The latest game from Garry, the same guy who made the critically acclaimed Gmod but this time it pits you against the harsh reality of the aftermath of a nuclear war. The game is nowhere near perfect but is great fun to play with friends. It shows the reality of what could happen if the attacks yesterday are not resolved.

4. Borderlands 2 - 146 Hours

Borderlands 2! The loot and shoot that is fun to play alone or with friends! The one with the good DLC! I can't recommend Borderlands enough to fans of guns.

3. Just Cause 2 - 194 Hours

Just Cause 2 was my first game on Steam. It was perfect to me. I plunged myself into the world of Panau and its citizens. It was an escape for me, an escape to a dystopia. Like Borderlands: The Pre Sequel i don't regret the playtime.

2. RPG Maker VX Ace - 225 Hours

Okay so this isn't a game but its still counted. Before I became a journalist I was into making Video Games. I made a few demo projects but they took up ridiculous amounts of time. I would have liked to published one of these games but the files were lost long ago.

1. Garry's Mod - 276 Hours

Gmod is a game that can make many games. It has a crazy amount of workshop mods and is possibly the greatest game to procrastinate in. Definitely worth checking out.

Weekly Roundup #29

Destiny 2 and the April Fools jokes!

Destiny 2 has been revealed this week! Bungie has confirmed the anticipated follow up to the successful online action RPG. You can pre order the game for a hefty £50 or get the extra content for even more. Destiny 2 will be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Yesterday was April Fools meaning devs added jokes to their games. Nvidia created a promotional advert for a GeForce GTX
G-Assist, a USB stick that could replicate your moves in game so you can go AFK and order energy drinks all from the GeForce experience app. It was obviously fake but it would have been cool.

UPDATE: Hideo Kojima Buys Steam for 75 Million Dollars

Earlier today Gabe Newell announced the auction of Steam. Hideo Kojima then responded a few hours later by buying the company at the asking price.

Valve faced closure before mr Kojima bought Valve. This means his company has merged to become Metal Valve productions. Every game made by Valve including the Half Life and CS series are now owned by the new company. Hide Kojima published a statement:

"As a gamer I know how much Steam meant to people. I am pleased to keep it running for the foreseeable future. I will work on the franchises that have redefined video games."

The games in question are the unfinished projects. Kojima said he would be adding 'distraction devices' into CSGO. This means you could duplicate yourself to trick the enemy. As for the sacred Half Life 3 he has teased that he will continue working on the singleplayer experiences that Gabe Newell told us about in a recent AMA on Reddit. One of these may be Half Life 3.

It will be interesting to see what will happen to Metal Valve and Steam in the nearby future and we wish Hideo Kojima the best of luck.

Valve is closing its doors, Steam up for auction

Today the Valve CEO Gabe Newell made a press statement about Steam. He announced that Valve software was to close due to financial issues. He told IGN about the closure, "Steam has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons and we have decided to auction off the software to avoid bankruptcy."

He continued.

"Steam has been our main IP (along with the counter strike series) for years and it will be a tragedy to gamers. We have been dissembling Steam in the past year. Greenlight was our latest but did you ever wonder what happened to the cyber cafe program? We didn't have the funding so it got axed. Games have been getting bad reviews in the recent years meaning less profit. If it wasn't for CSGO we would have shut down last year."

It is believed 5,000 jobs will be lost unless someone can buy Steam for the asking price of 75 million. We will keep you up to date on the latest,
